Today Apple announced their new “iPad.” Unfortunately, it sounds like a feminine hygiene product. And, not surprisingly, we saw a dip in Apple stock during the announcement, with a subsequent rebound.

While I am glad that Apple is finally trying to hit reasonable price points, in this case, starting at $499. But, sadly this device is missing many fundamental features I would look for in a tablet:

  • Stylus support, I want to draw and write note damn it)
  • Full OS Support, seriously, who wants to be constantly constrained by a walled garden?
  • Flash, how can you release a device, and bill it as an “internet device” and not support flash. I hate flash, but it is everywhere. You cannot offer the full internet experience without it.

I would much rather pick up a “ModBook” from Axiotron, although they are way too expensive (almost $2,000).

jjafuller I am glad you are able to give a realistic critique on this fanboy ruled organization which gouges prices with the likes of Exxon mobil.

RECORD EARNINGS QUARTER AFTER QUARTER – BUT OUR STUFF COSTS 2X MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE

my problem is i feel that is is just a glorified larger iphone / ipod touch

Its specs are so so … its built on the same OS as the IPod… just not happy about the product….don’ t feel as if its life changing like other announcements they’ve made before…

also I think it cost too much.

One 32gb new Iphone minus a plan costs $499. It’s pretty crazy they got this iPad even in it’s lowest feature set around that same price with the size of monitor and touch input.

Apple does make amazing products, yeah their laptops yes you do spend more money but most products they are quite similar.

Also I get a discount though work (a slight one but it removes sales tax) so even above that it’s still more cost effective for me to look toward apple comptuers more so a windows bundled dell.

To be honest what am I talking about most consumer products are dogshit.

The iPad is just a version 1.0 device. Just like MicroSoft, you shouldn’t buy new products unless you can afford (in time and money) to help the vendor debug their products. The 1.0 version of the iPhone was pretty poor too, but the v3 is much better and is actually one of the best smartphones. I’m not an Apple fanboy, but I am very disappointed in the iPad. We waited how long for this? Maybe we should have waited another year.

It is Apple anyway people will buy it, hell most people buy a netbook and use the same thing, if they stumble onto flash website they will go on the trend to blame it on the website rather than the device, I however wonder how iWorks will fare on it .
So hail to HTML5 (with javascript/ video / canvas) and goodbye plugins/embed/object (not even a quicktime integrated into the page), back from a (messy) modular design to a monolithic one thanks to Apple (who have always been fan of this ) and to Adobe (who helped hate badly coded plugins).

Good point about the HTML5. Youtube is doing a beta where you can test watching videos using HTML5 embed rather then flash and it works “OK”. My G5 iMac it does run choppy but it does work.

Trust me I’m no fan of flash at all but that does remove alot of web content. Oddly enough .pdf seems to be very much supported on this device.

But it’s good people are talking about this. Many people are going to buy this and end up being disapointed when their favorite video sites and games won’t work on it. The Farmville folks are going to shit a brick when they can’t grow crops.

V2 of the iPad will prob be much better and a widescreen option i’m sure is down the pike.

jja is going to buy one instantly. He should also buy Crackdown for the 360
