This is one of the biggest updates since the original release…for me, not you.
Basically, what I did was clean up the entire codebase as well as convert it all to C# (for my own benefit). I did manage to save a handful of KBs for those of you with small hard drives (yes, I know it requires .NET and that is freakin’ huge).
Anyhow, I did manage to stick in a few improvements, such as the next preference dialog, and a lot of little bug fixes and tweaks that make everything operate a little more smoothly.
New Features:
1. Added launch modes (restore buffer, open last file, clean document)
2. Redone preferences dialog
3. Converted to C#
Bug Fixes:
1. A bunch (mostly little inconsistences that I noticed while converting)
Todos:
1. Cursor
2. Word Count / Statistics
3. Limited Formatting Support
Check out the Dark Room Project Page
Or, just download now.
Glad to see you’ve switched from VB… I hate that language, C# definitely is my cup of tea. Nice work on your project as well by the way
Personally, I do not see what the big advantage is to C#. I know that I missed a variety of VB.net features such as late binding, the with constructor, Catch…When statements, etc… And perhaps the most annoying is not being able to just tag event functions as “handles.whatever” instead, I had to go into the designer code and manually add the event handlers.
SLANTY >:O
this is quite the update…i just reinstalled windows on my horrid laptop i’ll do some more “testing”…boob
jk :-*
One problem with the update — Control + , works, but choosing Preferences from Edit or by right-clicking doesn’t.
Any thoughts about making only the background transparent?
Thanks again for such a cool program.
The Edit > Preferences work for me but not the right click. The shortcut works as well.
But the main reason I’m writing this message is that it seems to me that this version is a bit sluggish compared to the last version I was using which was .4 I noticed that when I restored the window down and drag the window around my desktop it does it slow. Compared to before the program was very light and such.
Michael- I’ll check into the preferences issue. Also, Technically, you cannot make just the background transparent. It is technically possible to achieve that effect though. But, it would require me to alter the way the program works. And, since transparency is kind of contrary to what dark room is about, I am probably not going to implement it.
Latino- I would guess that the “sluggish” issue is related to the addition of transparency, but it might not be. I will take a look into it, and see what I can do about it. I don’t really notice a difference on my end though.
Hmm maybe it’s my computer. This guy is getting up there in age lol. But yea It was something that I noticed when I upgraded. I didn’t have transparency enabled though so would that still cause an effect?
Great little port of Write Room. Thanks so much for doing this. I can’t stand using word and this really helps me focus.
Any thoughts on added a spell check similar to how Write Room does it? That is the only feature I see it lacks. So migh say that it is a distraction but they may not be as terrible at speller a I am.
Thanks again for the great work!
Best regards
See I really can’t spell. Sorry for the typos.
meschach- yeah, I considered putting a spell checker in there. WriteRoom just taps into the system wide spellchecker in OS X. Unfortunately, nothing like that exists in windows. So, to add a spell checker I would have to bundle libraries that would add several megabytes to the distribution. Also, I do think that it does constitute a distraction. Typically, what I do is write whatever I have to write, then open the file in another text editor and do a spell check at the end. I’ve found that helps a lot, because in WriteRoom I am always stopping to correct spelling errors.
Michael & Latino- the preferences issue was just that I had a line of code commented out for the context menu. It will be fixed in the next release.
I love the idea, however Dark Room is eating up my system resources.
This screenshot shows the jump in the cpu use. Any solution?
Thanks.
not to be a pest but I noticed the same thing as memo…on a fresh and fully updated install of xp doing nothing in darkroom give me 8-11% CPU constantly on a P4 1.6Ghz laptop
:-*!
while typing in Dark Room if I press Tab to insert a tab, it tabs through the navigation controls. If I “Hide Navigation”, when I press tab nothing happens the cursor just stays at the same position.
also, right-click context menu for preferences doesn’t work for me either.
