Granholm Bumper Sticker

granholm bumper

Recently, I seem to be hearing more and more complaints about Granholm (indirectly targeted at Bush), by people who voted for her. So, I whipped up a simple bumper sticker that I may just have to slap on my automobile.

Progression of Michigan License Plates

As all good Michiganders know, our benevolent god has decreed that our old license plates were too hard to read, so she is squandering millions of dollars to update our plates to equally difficult to read different versions. So, I present to you the progression of the Michigan license plate.

2003

2003

For quite some time, we in Michigan have enjoyed beautiful, plane jane white on blue license plates. They never hurt anyone, and look fine to me. I could be wrong, but they have always seemed relatively easy to read. Furthermore, if you didn’t like them, there were numerous different offerings.

2007

2007

Apparently, this plate is easier to read, and has our state’s URL. Great, I’m sure that most people would NEVER think to put the state’s name in to pull up its website :???: Oh well, the road commission did not need the money, right? I mean Michigan roads could not be in better condition.

2011

2011

Our governor declared herself queen of Michigan in 2010 when there was no one left in the state to contest her. Her first order of business was to update the license plate to reflect the fact that all the other digits were no longer necessary to uniquely identify all the vehicles in the state.

Who Are You?

This post is coming a little earlier than I originally intended.

Recently, I put together a personality test that determines your Myers Briggs personality type. Then, based on your score for the different aspects I derived a list of “which character” are you descriptions.

Ultimately, my goal is to have a fully fleshed out site, with many different possible character sets, in addition to descriptions, and pictures for each. At this point, users can sign up, take the test, and get their results. I have it setup so that users only have to take the test once, and can go back and view their profile as new character sets are added.

The datasets are relatively incomplete at this point. Basically, this is what is in the database so far:

  1. Halo (characters & descriptions)
  2. Superhero (characters)
  3. Supervillian (characters)
  4. Family Guy (characters)
  5. Simpsons (characters)

In progress is a 24 character set, at the moment I have at least one character per type, but I would like to expand that to at least four per type.

If anyone would like to help work on this, drop me a line.

In the mean time, everyone is welcome to take the test!

Getting What you Deserve

I’m glad to say that the good luck of the Stealers (intentional misspelling) has FINALLY run out. Unfortunately, it did not run out last season. :???:

For those of you living under a rock, or are new fans of the site and haven’t bothered to follow the links in my sidebar…I am still steaming from the Seahawks loss in last year’s super bowl. My anger is predominantly centered around a touchdown that was not a touchdown. You can check out my previous post about it, read the debate and watch the video.

Now, fast forward to 2006 season. I know the preseason games are basically meaningless, but still. Just look at how many the Stealers managed to win: 0. This winning philosophy seems to have been carried into the season. Sure, they won the opener…against he Dolphins who are basically just the whipping boys of the AFC East. Ironically this was all done without the Stealer’s poster boy, Roethlisberger. As someone that has watched the 0-5, Lions for years, I can appreciate the irony that this win was at the hands of Charlie Batch.

Anyhow, after the Stealers got back their glorious leader, Ben, things sure have gotten better! Three consecutive loses to ok teams. Yup, if things continue this way for five or so years, the sting of last years travesty might finally start to fade. I love the fact that his cumulative quarterback rating for the year is 41.7 on the year. To make matters more amusing, ESPN is projecting that not to go up by year’s end.

One of the things that amuses me the most, is that all over the place people were saying how great they thought it was that the Stealers won the super bowl last year. They kept saying that they DESERVED it, like for some reason they were more entitled than the Seahawks. Well, I don’t see anyone saying that the Stealers deserves to be 1-3 on the season so far. I don’t see anyone saying that Ben deserves to have a rating of 41.7. So, my question is where are all these “deserve” people?

Tech Support

Recently, I have started a project for one of my clients that involves setting up a e-commerce back end to their site so they can sell their wares. The nature of the products being sold is fundamentally simple, however I was still planning on using osCommerce since it provides the most robust solution. Granted it is ugly as hell, both for the user and the for programmer.

Calling the host less than desirable would be an understatement. I had to jump through a series of hoops just to get to the control panel for the site. Things just got more bothersome from there. I figure most of the problems stem from the fact that the host uses IIS instead of the normal LAMP configuration. The funny thing is, is that it basically disables all the stuff that normally works on IIS and setup up a bunch of half working LAMP features, such as PHP and mysql. But, I digress…

In order to setup osCommerce, you need to have register globals enabled in your php setup. Yeah, I know it can open up security vulnerabilities, blah, blah. But, the core of osC was built a long time (as you can tell by looking at the source of any page) so it was still cool to use globals back then. Anyhow, it would be a lot of work slogging through all the pages and taking out all the references using globals and update them to the modern way of doing things. Now, this host had everything setup so that it would work correctly with the except of the fact that register globals was not enabled.

Now, this host does a pretty good job obfuscating any kind of support. Their “hosting network” is a twisting interlinking of different sites that only have a partial picture of what is going on. Eventually, I did manage to track down their ticket support system. So, I submitted a ticket inquiring to see if I could get register globals enabled for the domain. Three hours later they did send a reply that simply said:

“We will not enable register globals.”

No explanation, just a straight up denial.

After some consideration, I have decided to try out the drupal’s e-commerce solution, since I cannot use osC. Since this client does not require anything particularly complex, this should prove to be a good opportunity to evaluate it.

Anyhow, let this be a lesson to everyone to do some research before they get a host for themselves, or someone else. Because, most of them are awful and will over charge the hell out of you without a second thought.
