WordPress 2.5

What a pain in the ass. The included theme did not work (internal server error), so I thought something was screwed up in the config. I wasted a significant amount of time screwing with htaccess files, blowing away and recreating config files, etc… For whatever reason, when I went into the admin, and reset the theme to my default everything started working correctly. Lovely.

DRA Progress

So, I have started working on the port. Of course it is working out to be a “you can do stuff that was impossible before, but stuff that was easy before is impossible now” kind of scenario. I have made an initial environment for testing (no customization yet). I need to do a little more research to figure out why “undo” and “redo” don’t work, at all. I may have to write my own undo queue which is rather unpleasant.

Anyhow, I need to generate a certificate, and all the fancy signing and what not. I hope to release a pre-alpha for testing some time this week. On the bright side, this thing appears to handle utf files much better. I was open to paste, save, and open a mixed greek / arabic file.

Anyhow, that’s where we stand for the moment.

DarkRoom Air

I got some good and bad news for everyone. While I find it difficult to find time to work on the windows version of DarkRoom, I do not intend the pull the binary. So for people that are currently using it, they are welcome to continue, and will always be able to come here and get it, for free.

Now is where things getting interesting.

I need to lean Flex for a client project, and while poking around in it, I had an idea. I can make a much nicer version of DarkRoom, and release it as a cross platform air app. Aside from becoming cross platform, this transition would also allow much greater control over the interface that was possible using the tools the .net version is built on. My particular interest is in kerning and letting spacing, which are simply built into the text area, no monkey business necessary.

My only concern about this endeavor will be the stability of the application. So, as soon as possible I will be posting an alpha, and I would like people with large files to start using it. Ones that you know the regular DarkRoom would handle without problems, but might make a flex app choke.

How to Live Like a Cheapskate

By now, I’m sure that many of you are familiar with the Google Reader web app, that is basically an RSS aggregator which allows you to share articles from your feeds with your friends. If not, I suggest you check it out. Go ahead, I wait. Back? Ok, let’s proceed.

Every few days or so, I see that vanlandw shares another “how to live like a homeless person” article. These articles always seem bizarre to mean, because they always try to put a positive spin on something that sucks. Anyhow, Let me sum them all up in a nice bulleted list:

How to live like a cheap skate:

  • This is a religion.
  • You need to brainwash yourself into this set of beliefs. If you fail to so you’ll never be happy with this life style.
  • Quell desire to consume. Do not make purchases unless absolutely necessary to insure your survival. The threshold is, if there is more than a 50% you’ll die if you don’t make an acquisition.
  • Treat consumers as if they are of lesser intelligence. Since you are living a life of denial it is natural to resent those who obtain what you desire. So, it is ok openly be pissed at these people in order to let off a little steam, otherwise you’ll explode.
  • Believe that wealth is only determined by the amount of cash you have on hand. Deny that wealth is actually the summation of your assets minus liabilities.
  • Ignore the time value of money. As a reactionary response to the diminishing value of money you must horde as much as possible, with complete disregard to the fact that the money you hold continues to devalue.
  • Become obsessive about your hoarding. Make it the primary topic of your conversations. And then, chastise people who are not interested.
  • Die alone, because your spouse left you, and you disowned your children for being “financially reckless.”
