Welcome to the Little League

Today, the University of Michigan (MI) decided to implode. In what can only be described as a surreal game, MI spent nearly the entire game dominated by Michigan State University (MSU). Having watched the game, you would have never believed that MI came into the game undefeated at 4-0, and MSU limped in at 1-3 with their only victory coming against a 1-AA team.

Up until late into the fourth quarter everything favored MSU, the game was theirs to win, or nearly throw away as the case may be. Their coach made the critical mistake of going ultra conservative in a feeble attempt to run the clock at the end of the game. And, as so often is the case, the plan completely backfired.

After a few three and out possessions MI’s defense started to build some momentum for their team that started translating into their offense. The next thing I knew, the score was tied 20-20 with two seconds left on the clock. It is sickening to think that MSU collapsed so severely at the end to allow MI to come back and tie the game.

Overtime proved to be just as bizzare as regulation. MSU won the toss and elected to defend first. They successfully ended MI’s drive with an interception in the end zone. At this point, I am just thinking kick the ball, and get it overwith. Instead, MSU decide to do a pitch, and fumbles the ball for a nine yard loss effectively taking themselves out of field goal range. Brilliant. Somehow, they managed to gain back the loss on the next play. On third down they went for a run, which I can only hope was intended to setup the field goal. However, the running back decided to turn something into nothing and managed to get the ball in the end zone.

It was pretty screwed up, but the right team won in the end. Apparently, this is the first time in 42 years that MSU has had two consecutive wins against MI. All I have to say this to MI: welcome to the little league.

Battle to the Bottom of the Barrel

Sorry to people not appreciating my slew of football posts today. But, I have some good and bad news. The good news is that Grand Valley State University continues their seasons, thus far undefeated, by defeating Michigan Tech by a score of 55 to 7. The bad news is, the anticipated “Battle at the Ballpark” game at 5/3rd ballpark is looking to be rather underwhelming.

Ferris State is 1-3, 0-3 in the conference, and Michigan Tech is 0-3. This means that this “event” is really going to be a nonfactor in the scheme of things, and the only thing the winner will take away is their first conference win. Bummer. At the beginning of the season we were hoping that this might be a relavent game, and a battle between two schools with winning records.

To make matters worse, in a blunder of poor planning, this game is also being played the same weekend as the family weekend at MTU. Thus, it is uncertain how many student will actually be at the game, it will probably only be alumni.

Sadly, this will be no, “Bash at the Big House” but, two of my brothers are alumni from these schools, so I plan on attending no matter how pointless the game.
