iPad or nook color?

I find myself in a bit of a bind. I have been waiting for iOS 4.2 to be available for iPad before I pick one up. But, last week the new nook color was released. Today I heard rumor that Apple is planning on launching a second generation iPad in Q1 2011.

The primary purpose that I wanted to pick up an iPad was for reading PDF’s, particularly textbook style books. Now I am wondering if I should save the $250 and get a nook color, and then wait until the iPad 2 comes out next year. Or, should I just get an iPad 1 when iOS 4.2 comes out next week and hold on to it for a couple years.

Hmm…

UPDATE: After doing a hands on with the nook color, and the iPad I ended up going with the iPad. The nook color actually has a better screen, since its the same tech, and resolution, but smaller it looks sharper. Unfortunately the software and processing power of the nook color is inferior that makes PDF viewing inferior to the iPad. :-/

Today Apple announced their new “iPad.” Unfortunately, it sounds like a feminine hygiene product. And, not surprisingly, we saw a dip in Apple stock during the announcement, with a subsequent rebound.

While I am glad that Apple is finally trying to hit reasonable price points, in this case, starting at $499. But, sadly this device is missing many fundamental features I would look for in a tablet:

  • Stylus support, I want to draw and write note damn it)
  • Full OS Support, seriously, who wants to be constantly constrained by a walled garden?
  • Flash, how can you release a device, and bill it as an “internet device” and not support flash. I hate flash, but it is everywhere. You cannot offer the full internet experience without it.

I would much rather pick up a “ModBook” from Axiotron, although they are way too expensive (almost $2,000).
