Ubuntu 9.10

This has been a wonderful year for operating systems. Instead of adding garbage featured, more bloat, et… we’re seeing considerable effort put into improving performance. Snow Leopard is a marked improvement, so much so that I am finally getting around to putting it on my work machine. And, everyone already knows about the improvements to Windows 7. What I didn’t expect were the improvements to Ubuntu.

Granted, it it still hideous, and it is still linux, but damn, its fast. Traditionally my experience has been that Ubuntu has performed at around 70-80% of the speed of Windows XP. So, I was surprised how zippy and responsive 9.10 is. I dare say it is actually faster than XP now.

Good work “guys,” keep it up.

NativeMenu Glitch in Snow Leopard

Is anyone using the preview release of DarkRoomX in Snow Leopard? I have a testing system setup, and when I ran it I noticed a weird issue with the menu. Apparently, I am getting a duplicate, useless apple menu. I am curious if this is an issue with Air and Snow Leopard, or just DarkRoomX, if anyone knows an Air app that uses OS X’s native menu I would like to know so I can test it out.

How Not to Price Your Upgrades

This year, both Microsoft and Apple plan on releasing new versions of their OS’. Both Windows 7, and Snow Leopards are essentially the same as the prior releases except the fix problems in the previous version, and do some optimization. So, since these are not revolutionary upgrades I would expect them to be offered at a discounted rate.

Early this month, Apple announced that owners of Leopard will be able to purchase Snow Leopard at a discounted rate of $29.99. That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Today, Microsoft announced that owners of Vista will be able to purchase Vista 7 for a full blown $219.99. What a deal. To put this in perspective, the full version of Snow Leopard will be $129.99. Microsoft => FAIL.
