This year, both Microsoft and Apple plan on releasing new versions of their OS’. Both Windows 7, and Snow Leopards are essentially the same as the prior releases except the fix problems in the previous version, and do some optimization. So, since these are not revolutionary upgrades I would expect them to be offered at a discounted rate.

Early this month, Apple announced that owners of Leopard will be able to purchase Snow Leopard at a discounted rate of $29.99. That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Today, Microsoft announced that owners of Vista will be able to purchase Vista 7 for a full blown $219.99. What a deal. To put this in perspective, the full version of Snow Leopard will be $129.99. Microsoft => FAIL.

Alright, so after experiencing a few issues with the Windows 7 beta running under vmware fusion (it worked pretty well, but I thought it could be better) I decided to install it on my aging inspiron 5160. I had been meaning to wipe this machine for a while, so this was a good time to try out a temporary operating system.

Thus far, it seems to be working quite well. I was surprised to see that it supposed the wireless card automatically, and that is a rarity. At the moment I am trying to download some drives from nvideo to in order to get my display resolution up to where its supposed to be. The generic driver it assigned to the card only goes up to 1280×1028.

Everything seems a lot more stable running directly on hardware rather than emulation. I think I’ll try it for a while more tonight to get a better impression.

By the way, the biggest thing I have noticed about windows 7 is that it feels alot faster than vista. I know for sure now that I have it one this machine, which was running vista pro before.

Update: I was able to get an ancient windows 2000/xp drive to work for my graphic card. So that’s pretty sweet. And, I just checked my resource usage. Apparently, booted to the desktop with only windows running it is using 362mb of ram, not to bad at all.
